    Sierra Snowboards

    Rate this deal!

    1. Up to 70% off on ski and snowboard equipment.
    2. Get free shipping on any order.
    3. You won’t find a better deal, but just in case they will price match and give you an extra 10% discount.
    4. Get a 65,000 member community with advice and lots of forum postings!

The Catch: Not only does Sierra Snowboards have great prices on their products, they also offer a huge support forum with many active community members. Having a reputable place to ask for advice is always a plus when you are shopping online.

I was especially impressed with the sale section on their website where I found gloves from Burton (w/ Gore Tex inserts) for around $20 (usually $70) and snowboard cargo bags for $35 (these are at least $50 anywhere else). Helmets, name brand clothing, and snowboards were all on sale too.

With the free shipping it would be tough to beat any of the deals here. If you do find a better deal within 15 days, Sierra Snowboards will credit the difference + 10%. Not too bad! You can also find deals for ski equipment at www.sierraski.com.

The Sierra Ski and Snowboard websites are packed with equipment deals and advice. Their site navigation also made it easy to find specific products, their details, and good pictures.

    Hilton Hotel Reward Program

By The Net Analyst | November 8, 2008

The second hotel reward program under examination is Hilton HHonors. No, that’s not a typo. The Hhonors program is spelled with the letter H twice. Aside from the grammatical issues, their bonus structure and VIP program is outstanding and I will show you a way to earn a minimum of 20 points per dollar spent and a 15% point bonus at any of the Hilton brand hotels!

Read the table below according to this example: Getting 7,500 points requires spending $375 on Hilton Hotel stays assuming 20 points/dollar spent. A free night at an $80/night hotel generally costs 7,500 points. $80 divided by $375 is about 21%.

This method is used to create a range of savings. Note that the range is based on 20 points per dollar and does not include the 15% bonus that you will receive with automatic Silver VIP status provided by the Hilton Honors credit card. The information provided below is a low estimate!

1 Night at: Points Required Dollars Spent (assume 15 points/dollar) Typical Room Cost per Night % Rebate
    Opportunity to Class 2 Hotels 7,500-20,000 $375-$1,000 $80-$130 13%-21%
    Class 3 to 4 Hotels 25,000-30,000 $1,250-$1,500 $80-$240 7%-16%
    Class 5 to 6 Hotels 35,000-40,000 $1,750-$2,000 $130-$440 7%-22%
    Most Waldorf=Astoria Collection Hotels 40,000 to 80,000 $2,000-$4,000 $400-$600 $15-20%

    The Review Method

Here is an excerpt from the first hotel reward program article explaining the process I went through to determine the benefits of each reward program:

“I searched for properties and point redemption values in Houston, Las Vegas, New York City, Chicago, and Orlando during the month of November (no holidays) in order to get a general idea for the cost of a typical room.

The programs I have chosen to review offer the most perks (room upgrades, free stays, etc.), the best point structures (converted into dollar amounts), and thousands of locations to stay at worldwide. All of the programs featured will be considered with their corresponding credit cards as additional point accumulation and benefits can be earned this way.

The Actual Cost of a Free Stay

The cost of free stays can range from 5,000 points/night at a less expensive brand to upwards of 60,000 points/night at a posh luxury resort. This makes it difficult to calculate the actual value of the rewards because point redemptions vary so greatly among the different hotel brands.

I will use a percentage rebate amount to determine the actual benefits of each reward program. This will make for easier comparison between reward programs and give you a more realistic perception of what you actually get.”

    Hilton Hhonors

    Rate this hotel!

    3 + 1 Ways to Earn Points

The first 2 ways to earn points with Hilton hotels involves earning frequent flier miles and the 3rd way gives you additional Hilton Hhonors points. When you break it down, the extra points for Hilton stays is clearly worth more than airline miles.

    1. Earn 10 HHonors Base points + 1 airline mile per eligible U.S. dollar spent*
    2. Earn 10 HHonors Base points per eligible U.S. dollar spent + 500 miles per stay (100 miles per stay at Hampton Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites and Homewood Suites by Hilton.**)
    3. Earn 10 HHonors Base points + 5 bonus points per eligible U.S. dollar spent

Note: For those of you who have not read any of my previous articles, I think that airline miles and their associated credit cards are a big rip off. In fact, credit cards are just a big rip off unless you have very strict spending habits. I suggest going with the extra points whether or not you use the Hilton credit card described below.

The optional 4th way earns you over 20 points per dollar spent on your Hilton Stays. This can be accomplished with the Hilton HHonors Platinum Card from American Express which will give you an extra 5 points for every dollar spent on your hotel visit and a free upgrade to Silver VIP status. The Silver VIP status will give you another 15% point bonus on top of everything else!

The American Express Hilton Honors card can earn you points and upgrades by a few other means. Here are the specifics:

    Automatic VIP Status

Consider the credit card if you are interested in the automatic upgrade to Silver VIP status with the ability to attain Gold status when you spend $20,000 annually on the card. Last but not least you can have it all with Diamond VIP status if you accumulate 100,000 points per year. Another great feature is the additional point bonused available for different VIP levels. Each level is summarized below.

    Silver VIP

    Gold VIP

    The Choice Hotel Reward Program

By The Net Analyst | October 29, 2008

    Confused by Hotel Reward Programs?

There are many hotel reward programs available throughout the United States and abroad, but their point structures and redemption allowances for free stays are complicated and misleading. This is certainly not the first review of hotel reward programs, but it is unique and it does offer a clear breakdown of what you actually get for every dollar spent at the largest hotel chains.

Because hotel reward programs are so complicated, this task will be accomplished one reward program at a time in a series of reviews.

This will make for easier comparison between reward programs and give you a more realistic perception of what you actually get.

The 5 Best Hotel Reward Programs

The best “average” hotel reward programs are through Choice Hotels (Comfort Suites, Sleep Inn, etc.) and Priority Rewards (Holiday Inn Brands) while the best “luxury” hotel reward programs include Hilton, Marriott, and Westin. The first program that we will look at is Choice Hotel Privileges.

    Choice Hotel Privilages

    pet friendly 90x90 chihuahua

    Rate this hotel!

With the Choice Hotels Privileges Visa you will get 15 points for every dollar spent at over 3,700 “choice privileges” locations in the US, Canada, and Europe. You get the premium reward of 15 points at 3,700 of their 5,500 locations worldwide, but you can redeem points at any of the Choice Hotel locations including luxury resort properties.

To get you started the reward card will give you 8,000 points after your first purchase and and another 8,000 points after your first stay. 8,000 points will get you 1 free night at 1,500 of their lowest tier hotels.

Because you cannot or will not stay in their lowest tier hotels all the time you can see how the points convert to actual percentages in the table below. I searched for properties and point redemption values in Houston, Las Vegas, New York City, Chicago, and Orlando during the month of November (no holidays) in order to get a general idea for the cost of a typical room.

Then I converted the point redemptions into a percentage reward for staying at Choice Hotels in the table below. You may also exchange the points for other various rewards including air travel, but using them for a hotel stay is a much more lucrative.

    Other Benefits

    • 5 points/dollar when purchasing additional points or gift cards
    • 2 points for every dollar spent elsewhere
    • Bonus points through their huge online shopping network (example: 20 points/dollar on Turbo Tax software, 6 points/dollar at Macy’s, etc.)
    • 5,000 points for renewing your wireless phone contract
    • 3 elite member levels with consecutive 10%, 25%, and 40% point bonuses
    • NO BLACKOUT DATES!

Read the table below according to this example: Getting 5000 points requires spending $333 on Choice Hotel stays assuming 15 points/dollar spent. A free night at a $60/night hotel generally costs 5000 points. $60 divided by $333 is about 18%. I’ve done the math about 10 times since I cannot believe how big this bonus is; yet the math keeps working out correctly!

1 Night at: Points Required Dollars Spent (assume 15 points/dollar) Typical Room Cost per Night % Rebate
    1,500 lower-end hotels 5,000-8,000 $333-$533 $60-$80 18%-25%
    4,000 better hotels 10,000-25,000 $666-$1,666 $100-$450 15%-27%
    Hawaii Properties 25,000-35,000 $1,666-$2,333 $120-$200 7%-9%

*In row 3 hotel rooms in New York City costing over $400 per night could be redeemed for 25,000 points.

*You can get the best deal by spending your points in New York City and the worst deal by spending your points in Hawaii.

*Points can also be redeemed for luxury stays at Preferred Hotels® & Resorts and Summit Hotels & Resorts for 24,000 to 50,000 points per night.

    Free T-Shirts and Business Cards!

By The Net Analyst | October 23, 2008

Fall Clearance Sale-Save up to 90%

    FREE T-Shirt

    Rate this deal!

    1. Get custom printing for an incredibly cheap price from Vistaprint!
    2. Until 10/25/08 get 250 free business cards and a free t-shirt!
    3. Customized t-shirts are only $5 a piece!
    4. Shipping is only around 5 bucks!

The Catch: Vistaprint basically has the cheapest t-shirt and custom printing deals that I’ve been able to find. They are currently running several different promotions, but I have included 2 links to the best ones which include the free t-shirt offer and the free business card deal. You really just pay the shipping!

I ordered a custom t-shirt just as a gag gift and it cost under $11 including the $5 shipping. I’ve paid over $20 a piece for custom t-shirts in the past with recreational sports teams and my jaw dropped to the floor when I saw this.

The free t-shirt deal is only good until 10/25/08 although it will likely be extended. Vistaprint can customize just about anything, so I would suggest trying one of the freebies to evaluate their products for yourself.

    Zecco Offers Unlimited Free Trading!

By The Net Analyst | October 4, 2008

    Rate this deal!

    1. Get free & unlimited stock and option trades for the month of October!
    2. Fund an account with just $2,500.
    3. Then get 10 free trades per month forever!

The Catch: Zecco and several other online brokers experienced huge increases in trading volume last month causing problems with some of their trading platforms. The problem has been resolved and since then Zecco has doubled their available trading capacity with more increases to come.

Because Zecco is a customer friendly broker and they made lots of money from the volatility last month, the CEO has decided to give everyone unlimited free trading for the entire month of October.

I have written about Zecco in the past (see Best Discount Brokers) and this good faith effort to keep traders happy has reinforced my positive opinion. They do charge extra for services like GainsKeeper and advanced trading software but its worth it for the 10 free monthly trades and $4.50 trades thereafter.

The new deal they have going with unlimited free trades is unheard of and offers a good opportunity to check them out. Aside from one tough week in September, I have definitely seen major quality improvements in the last few months. Thanks Zecco!

A Good Night’s Sleep For Cheap!

By The Net Analyst | October 2, 2008

I’m writing this post for those of us who live in noisy college dorms, busy city areas, and those of us who work the graveyard shift. Here is a solution to blot out the sun and eliminate noise (you no longer have to sleep in your closet). There is a solution and it is less costly than you may think! Nothing compares to a good night’s sleep!

    30+ Decibel Ear Plugs
    ear plugs

Block out annoying neighbors, traffic, and the dog you keep calling the cops on for noise complaints (:

Cost: Box of 50 for $10

    Cotton Bandanas

    Bandanas

Bandanas are more comfortable and work better than blindfolds. Blot out more light with darker colors.

Cost 1 dozen for $9 at Tans Club

    Aluminum Foil + Duct Tape

This is a really cheap alternative to the following and is a good way to seal off every nook and cranny of you window.

Cost < $5-10 depending on window size.

    Black Out Curtains

Do not confuse with thermal curtains. Light cannot actually get through the fabric of these curtains, but you will get a bit of light around the edges. You may still need some of that fancy duct tape.

    Cost $80-$100 (2 panels) at Linen’s & Things

    Benadryl

    Cost < $5 per month

You may not know this, but all of the FDA approved over-the-counter sleep aids contain diphenhydramine (diphen-what?). Diphenhydramine is just the active ingredient found in Benadryl. Don’t be fooled into spending $10 or $15 dollars on products with fancy brand names. Benadryl has the exact same active ingredient and will send you off to dreamland just as well.

Upside: It may help you sleep, is FDA approved, and has a long history of use.

Downside: It often causes morning grogginess.

    Melatonin

Yet another option for sleepless nights, Melatonin has been studied primarily for its effects on jet lag. The substance is actually a hormone that your body produces when it starts getting dark outside. The products you find in store are synthesized in a lab so you don’t have to worry about contracting prion disease from human corpses.

    Cost < $5 per month

Upside: It may help you sleep.

Downside: Primarily studied for short term use in jet lag.

    Valerian root

Valerian root is a very cheap and very old herbal supplement. It is found in most herbal sleeping concoctions and it thought to be a safe, natural alternative for insomnia in much of the world.

    Cost < $5 per month

Upside: It has been around since the Middle Ages and is well studied in Europe.

Downside: The pills smell funny ):

**The following are inexpensive prescription drugs. See your doctor for complete information.**

    Ambien (zolpidem)

If nothing else works Ambien is one of the cheapest prescription sleep aids available. Although it may cause rebound insomnia for a day or two, it is not physically addictive like Xanax or Konopin (older sleep aids).

    Cost = $17.99 per month at drugstore.com

Upside: Knocks most people out in about 15 minutes and causes less morning grogginess than many other sleeping aids.

Downside: It has a shorter duration of effect (usually 4-6 hrs) than other prescription sleep medications. It needs a prescription. It rarely causes sleep walking incidents.

    Amitriptyline

    Cost= $4 per month

Upside: It is cheap, it works, and it has a long track record.

Downside: Amitriptyline can cause morning grogginess and other minor side effects.

    Sweet Dreams!

    2. The card usually costs $15, but you only pay $5.

GNC is a reputable company and the Gold Card discount can be used on sale products. If you can find something that you need when it goes on sale and use the card you will be getting a nice deal. It is also nice to have access to a retail outlet when you need something and GNC stores can be found all over the country.

    The Best Reward Debit Card

By The Net Analyst | September 14, 2008

I often mention using credit cards for their cash rebate programs and feature the ones that I personally have used on this website. Most people have found the information useful, but I have also received some comments about how badly some people have gotten screwed by credit card companies. I don’t want this to happen to anyone!

    So… Don’t Get Screwed

Misuse of credit cards will obviously lead to financial demise and an easy line of credit is not for everyone. That is why I began searching for an an alternative to credit card rebate programs that will still help you to meet your savings goals without the risk of going into debt!

    Try a Rebate Debit Card

The program detailed below will give you a rebate on your purchases and only involves using debit transactions. The program is available through Bank of America and can help you accumulate a few hundred extra dollars in savings on an annual basis. The program simply involves opening a free checking and a free savings account. The program is referred to as "Keep the Change ."

    Here’s How It Works

    1. You buy a sandwich for $4.49.
    2. You round the transaction up to $5.00.
    3. $0.51 is automatically deposited into your savings account.
    4. Bank of America matches 5% of your $0.51 with $0.03.
    5. This goes for all of your daily expenditures.
    6. They will contribute up to $250 to your savings account annually.

Get a 5% Bonus on Savings

Not only does Bank of America help you save your own money, they give you a nice bonus of 5% at the end of the year! This is money that you won’t miss and will help you to live within your means. It could be used for a vacation or transferred to a high yield money market account (visit Bankrate to compare savings options). You can basically do whatever you want with the money you save and not worry about going into credit card debt!

    A 100% Bonus for 3 Months

Another great part of this program is that Bank of America will match your "Keep the Change" savings at 100% for the first 3 months instead of at 5% to give you a head start. The only catch is that you will have to refrain from spending the money put into your savings account. It would be a good idea just to forget that it exists and let it accumulate (:

    It’s Easy and Automatic

The best thing about "Keep the Change" is that it is automated like saving in a 401k. You don’t even have to think about it. The amount of change added into your savings account is also so small that it won’t be missed. Next you thing you know there is a few hundred dollars in the account! Tada! Just go to www.bankofamerica.com/ktc for more details. If credit cards are not your thing then this is a great way to save a few extra bucks!

    Massage Envy Deal

By The Net Analyst | September 11, 2008

    Massage Envy

    massage envy

    Rate this deal!

    1. A 1 hour intro massage for $39 from Massage Envy
    2. Optional membership is $49 per month
    3. Membership includes a monthly 1 hour massage
    4. Nationwide locations

The Catch: You still have to leave a tip!

Massage Envy has made the benefits of massotherapy available to more people through their discount membership program. Try them out for $39, then optional membership is $49 per month (includes a 1 hour massage session) with additional 1 hour sessions for only $39!

It is also nice to know that unused massage sessions will roll over to following months, so you never lose anything that you pay for. Their facilities are clean and they even have heated tables! If massage is something you enjoy, this is probably the best deal you will find anywhere.

One more question that has been asked about massage envy is in regards to how much to tip. An important thing to consider here is that a 1 hour massage for a non-member generally costs around $70 at most Massage Envy locations and even more at a day spa.

In my opinion, a Massage Envy membership is like paying for dinner with a gift card. Just because you got a deal with the gift card doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip on the full cost of the meal. I’m all about saving money, but it’s also important to be fair to people in any tipping industry. A 20% tip for good quality service is customary these days.

    Save On Gum

By The Net Analyst | September 5, 2008

    The Cost Of Gum

Bamm! It hit me at Target when I was shopping for a pack of gum. Yes… I am aware… shopping for gum is not the most exciting task, but I had an enlightenment while analyzing its pricing structure.

Perhaps you never noticed, or perhaps you just don’t care about the unit cost of gum. I on the other hand do and my analysis led me to start thinking about all of the small things we buy that we can save money on.

    Shop Prepared

I usually go into into the supermarket prepared. My shopping preparation usually involves buying the Sunday paper and browsing through the store’s ad for their best deals. I might save $2 on lunch meat or get a free laundry detergent from a BOGO sale. I usually don’t clip coupons, but it is a good idea.

    Everything Has A Unit Cost

When in the store I actually check out the unit cost of the items on my list. Sometimes the deals in the Sunday add end up being a bunch of fluff because many of the sale items are over-priced to begin with. In the instance below I basically got an extra pack of gum for the cost of a dime.

Trident White 3 pack $1.89 for 36 pieces 5.25 cents per piece
Regular Trident 3 pack $1.99 for 54 pieces 3.69 cents per piece

As silly and time consuming as this seems, it can really make a difference on your grocery bill. This is true because it makes you pay attention to what you are actually putting in your shopping cart. There are also plenty of great products that cost less because their manufacturers do not spend as much money on advertising!

    Try Store Brands

If you are a "brand name" person you should really consider trying some different products considering that "store brands" have come a long way since they were first introduced. This in itself can save you oodles of money and every store out there is cool with returning a store brand product that turns out to be crummy.

The most ridiculous instance that I have seen of brand name silliness was when I witnessed a woman refuse to purchase store brand Vasaline. To the sales clerk she arrogantly stated, "I’m a brand-name person." I can’t imagine why anyone would blow an extra $3 on petroleum jelly just because it says Vasaline on the label.

    Remember… Pennies Make Dollars

When I was a young kid my grandfather would save all his loose change in an ash tray on his night stand and give it to me saying, "pennies make dollars." He did this every time that I payed him a visit to reinforce the point. When it comes to saving money and practically everything else we do in life, it all comes down to the little things we do every day.
